How does my current "Sponsor A Child" help a child in need during the relief efforts?
A donation of $25/month will help in the relief efforts of our children in restavek. Our most important concern at this time is to locate, feed, supply aid and provide shelter for the child during these vulnerable hours, days, and months ahead. We are still assessing the situation on the ground, and the child's needs are changing daily. Therefore, we are unable at the time to provide you exact detail of what the sponsorship program will look like in the days ahead, but we can tell you that it will all go directly to ensuring they are supported and loved unconditionally. We will have more specifics on what your child sponsorship means over the course of the next few months once we are able to stablizing our position in Haiti. We want everyone to understand that our staff is working around the clock and passionately to assist every need of the children at this time.
We had many children in our sponsorship program prior to the disaster and unfortunately, many are still missing and unaccounted for at this time. Once we are able to identify and ensure the child's safety, you will be notified of the child you are sponsoring. We ask that you please be patient as our facilities rebuild, reassess the sponsorship program and get a better scense of what it will take to ensure the children have a brighter future.
What was your "sponsor a child" program before the quake?
$25/mth sent a child to school, provided tuition, the required school uniforms, books, and supplies.
Education is the escape route. It is the status symbol that transforms restaveks into children in the eyes of their owners. In a uniform, in carrying books and in gaining knowledge, a restavek child is less likely to be abused and more likely to find the better life they deserve. Every hour that a restavek child attends school, is one less hour they spend carrying 5-gallon water barrels or doing grueling chores.
In case after case, The Foundation has found that restavek children that go to school slowly gain back self-confidence and dignity. Additionally, with the capability to read and write, they have the skills needed to contribute to Haitian society and escape the restavek system. Most importantly, education and accountability from child advocates help stop the abuse. Owners begin to see children as children and not property.
There are two ways to sponsor a child:
- Full Child Sponsor - Donate $300 for a full year and we will assign a specific child (once identified and located to a safe area) for you to follow. Our child advocates will provide updates on the child's well-being and progress. For your convenience, your donation may be made through an automatically recurring $25 monthly donation.
- General Child Sponsor - Donate any amount to our general sponsorship fund and provide the children with immediate relief items, such as, food, aid and shelter. The general fund provides the same support to our children and also covers special needs that arise for specific children.
